What are restorative practices?
Restorative practices in the classroom help build stronger relationships, foster empathy, and create a positive learning environment. Instead of focusing only on punishment when problems arise, restorative practices emphasize:
- Mending relationships between students, teachers, and peers
- Encouraging accountability in a constructive way
- Building community through open communication and trust
- Repairing harm caused by negative behavior
Restorative practices shift the focus from punishment to growth, making schools safer, more inclusive, and more effective learning environments.
“Restorative justice practices — including community-building tools, behavior and conflict interventions, and student-centered instructional practices — can change the conditions that contribute to harm by developing a positive school climate, healthy relationships, and productive responses to misbehavior.”
